At Computex 2024, Asus has unveiled the ROG Ally X, an upgraded version of its popular handheld gaming device, the ROG Ally. Designed for gamers who crave the ability to play the latest PC titles on the go, the ROG Ally X promises significant enhancements in ergonomics, cooling, and overall performance, while still maintaining the reliable AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor.

Key Upgrades and Features

Enhanced Ergonomics and Design

One of the standout features of the ROG Ally X is its redesigned chassis. Asus has focused on improving the device's ergonomics by incorporating slightly deeper handles and a more rounded shape. This redesign aims to enhance comfort without significantly increasing the device's thickness. According to Asus, the buttons and sticks now have a more rounded shape, and the triggers are easier to press, making the device more comfortable for extended gaming sessions.

Improved Cooling System

The ROG Ally X introduces a new and improved thermal solution. The device now features fans that are 23 percent smaller but have 50 percent more blades, which Asus claims enhances airflow by 10 percent. Additionally, a third vent has been added to reduce the temperature by six degrees Celsius. These improvements are crucial for maintaining performance during intense gaming sessions, preventing overheating, and extending the lifespan of the device.

Upgraded Hardware

The ROG Ally X retains the powerful AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor but offers significant upgrades in memory and storage. The device comes with up to 24GB of RAM and offers up to 1TB of SSD storage. These enhancements ensure that the ROG Ally X can handle demanding games and multitasking without any issues. The upgraded hardware makes it an attractive option for gamers who need a portable yet powerful gaming solution.

Connectivity and Battery Life

In terms of connectivity, Asus has made some notable changes. The ROG Ally X replaces the original XG Mobile port with two USB-C ports, one of which is Thunderbolt compatible. This change provides more versatility and compatibility with various peripherals and accessories. The device also features an 80Wh battery, which is double the size of its predecessor. Despite supporting 100W fast charging, the bundled charger is rated at 65W for reasons that Asus has not disclosed.

Weight and Additional Features

The ROG Ally X weighs 678 grams, making it 70 grams heavier than the original ROG Ally. However, this slight increase in weight is a small trade-off for the substantial improvements in battery life and cooling. Other notable features include dual front-facing speakers, updated Armory Crate software, and Seamless Sync for a more integrated gaming experience.

Pricing and Availability

The ROG Ally X is currently available for pre-order in Taiwan for 25,999 TWD, which roughly translates to Rs 66,827. However, there is no word yet on whether Asus plans to launch the handheld gaming device in India or other international markets.

Conclusion

Asus has significantly upgraded the ROG Ally with the new ROG Ally X, addressing many of the shortcomings of its predecessor while introducing new features that enhance the overall user experience. The improved ergonomics, enhanced cooling system, increased RAM and storage options, and better connectivity make the ROG Ally X a compelling choice for gamers looking for a powerful and portable gaming solution.

The introduction of dual USB-C ports, including one Thunderbolt-compatible port, increases the device's versatility, allowing for a wider range of peripheral connections. The larger 80Wh battery and support for 100W fast charging, despite the bundled 65W charger, ensure that the device can handle longer gaming sessions without frequent recharging.

While the ROG Ally X has yet to be confirmed for markets outside Taiwan, its competitive pricing and impressive feature set suggest it could become a popular choice among gamers worldwide. Stay tuned for further updates on the international availability and pricing of the Asus ROG Ally X.
